F-Secure Safe just cannot handle the new malware? (rhetorical)

Remember the good old days when f-prot av was easy to use and did the job? No more.

Windows 8.1/7 dual boot. Virulent viruses, mostly trojan are cleaned only to come back again with hours.

F-safe cannot quarantine some but won't tell you why?

Gives you a choice of delete, quarantine or skip with no indication of the difference between quarantine and delete. If you quarantine them all, guess what they are back the next few hours. BS. Doesn't work.

Have to keep reinstalling programs that get nuked by the AV "check".

Only to become infected a few hours later. Safe mode in windows is the only thing I can run without my

computer being slowed to a crawl. Alrready tried looking for run runonce and other nasties that might indicate an trojan being re-executed and found nothing.

Since your av program "free" doesn't work (and buggy as hell too) how about you give me a guide on how

to wipe my c: partition and reinstall windows cuz your av program does not work.

And how about telling me why it cannot quarantine some of the viruses. If I choose delete in you "av" program, does that mean I will not be able to boot my laptop again?

On top of that very hard to register here, endless captcha that wants to ID you and profile you, just a royal PITA. But guess what the similar eset "Free" trial is just as bad but for different reason and kaspersky KVRT

you cannot choose for it not to scan zip files, making it useless. But with your program you cannot choose the folders to be scanned, making it slow slow slow, painfully so.

God help us. The virus hackers are winning.

    Hello @MikkeyLikesit

Welcome to the F-Secure Community page. Thank you for your post.

F-safe cannot quarantine some but won't tell you why?

There are a few reasons why the F-Secure product cannot remove or clean the detected file after virus scanning was completed, such as:

    • The file is located inside an archive (for example a ZIP,RAR,7z etc)
    • The file is a read-only media file (CD-ROM, DVD-ROM etc)
    • The file is encoded within an email message
    • The system does not have permission to delete the file
    • The file is a temporary file created by an application, like browser downloads in progress, network streams and similar

You may check this online article to help you https://community.f-secure.com/safe-en/kb/articles/6246-how-to-remove-malicious-files-viruses-malware-manually-f-secure-safe-internet-security-did-not-remove-them-automatically

Gives you a choice of delete, quarantine or skip with no indication of the difference between quarantine and delete. If you quarantine them all, guess what they are back the next few hours. BS. Doesn't work.

Quarantined: Moves the file to a safe location that the F-Secure SAFE manages. This option does not delete or clean the file. It is similar to quarantining a sick person so that they can't infect anyone else; they are not removed permanently, nor are they healed.

Delete: Completely removes the file from your computer, which is useful if you don't want it anymore. As with any deleted file, a file that is deleted by F-Secure SAFE is no longer visible and can't be used.

The detected file that is quarantined cannot do any harm or access any files on your computer, as it is placed in quarantine. It is possible to manually remove the file from quarantine as follows:

    1. Open F-Secure SAFE on your computer
    2. Select Viruses & Threats
    3. Select App and file control
    4. Select Yes to "Do you want to allow this app to make changes to your device"
    5. Select the file you want to remove by clicking <the item name>
    6. Select Remove

Note: If you are not sure whether you should delete the file from quarantine or not, submit a sample for our virus labs to check the file first.

If you notice the file is restored after deleting it, we encourage you to provide a diagnostic file from the computer and one of the detected files.

Since your av program "free" doesn't work (and buggy as hell too) how about you give me a guide on how

to wipe my c: partition and reinstall windows cuz your av program does not work.

Deleting the file will only remove the file from your machine. It does not effect the ability to reboot your machine.

you cannot choose for it not to scan zip files, making it useless. But with your program you cannot choose the folders to be scanned, making it slow slow slow, painfully so.

You can set the scanning settings manually to scan inside the compressed file. Running a scan in the compressed file will take a longer time.

Currently, no malware is known to infect straight from compressed files. For such an infection to occur, the executable file would need to be extracted to a temporary location first in which case the F-Secure product would detect it before it could be launched by the user.

An archive (a compressed file) is not an exe file meaning it cannot be run without the administrator's permission, therefore it poses no threat from an antivirus software's point of view.

That's alright, what goes around comes around. I guess f-prot doesn't really care if they get new customers.

Ok thanks for your detailed reply. I'm using the free trial on f-prot one as offered on the web. I can't recall the exact name as your program does not work in windows safe mode with networking enabled. I tried to get it to work and it won't even load even with a shortcut to the program in non safe mode. As you know sometimes users go to safe mode to scan any windows files that may not be available to a scanner in regular mode. Do you tell your prospective customers that it cannot be run in safe mode?

There IS a setting to avoid scanning zip files, and that is what I wanted. Your competitors don't all have that and makes their scan take WAY too long trying scan files in compressed zip and other formats. However your competitors DO allow fo selection of individual partitions and folders which your program DOES NOT disallowing users from trying to limit excessively long scan times that are unnecessary.

Until you offer these features, no way I'd pay for your program. I can't tie up my machine for hours and hours to get a good scan. And both you and your competitors are way too slow even on a high speed net connection. I'm talking about a 500 gb drive here, not that big by today's standards.

Users are now going to sandboxing and programs like deep freeze because you guys just don't cut it any more.

F-prot used to be a good program until the ransomware and other hackers got better, now it's trying unsuccessfully to play catchup.

I am guessing the problem I am having is a windows update problem that is allowing a RAT or other trojan to access my machine when online. And I have doubts your online real time scanner can deal with that as the viruses keep coming back even after multiple scans and quarantines. Just doesn't work, sorry.

    Hello @MikkeyLikesit

    Thank you for your comment.

We would like to inform you that in Safe Mode, Windows won't load third-party startup programs or hardware drivers.

Only the applications related to the operating system will work in safe mode.

However your competitors DO allow fo selection of individual partitions and folders which your program DOES NOT disallowing users from trying to limit excessively long scan times that are unnecessary.

You may scan a particular Windows Explorer or partitions by following this instruction https://help.f-secure.com/product.html#home/safe-windows/latest/en/task_990C763BDF894646A1DD308BE2520EA5-safe-windows-latest-en

And both you and your competitors are way too slow even on a high speed net connection. I'm talking about a 500 gb drive here, not that big by today's standards.

The speed of scanning depends on the scanning settings. To have faster scanning, you can select "Scan only file types that commonly contain harmful code" https://help.f-secure.com/product.html#home/safe-windows/latest/en/task_DA9DC2D0CF664461B679DD6157516892-safe-windows-latest-en

F-prot used to be a good program until the ransomware and other hackers got better, now it's trying unsuccessfully to play catchup.

F-Secure SAFE/Anti-Virus/Internet Security does include protection against ransomware. F-Secure will monitor your important folders and block ransomware from encrypting them and this can be seen from the Virus and Threats section of the F-Secure program.

You can utilize the Ransomware Protection in F-Secure SAFE to provide additional protection as guided here https://help.f-secure.com/product.html#home/safe-windows/latest/en/task_8A1E6E8336D94A2996A1596289339773-safe-windows-latest-en

Real-time scanning protects the computer by scanning all files when they are accessed and by blocking access to those files that contain malware.

If Real-time scanning finds any harmful content, it puts the file to quarantine before it can cause any harm https://help.f-secure.com/product.html#home/safe-windows/latest/en/real_time_scanning-safe-windows-latest-en

You may turn on the real-time scanning as guided here https://help.f-secure.com/product.html#home/safe-windows/latest/en/turn_on_rt_scanning-safe-windows-latest-en

Please send a computer diagnostic file and one of the detected files if you find that the files return after manual removal. Don't forget to zip up the discovered file in a password-protected manner.

Here is how you can create the diagnostic file: https://community.f-secure.com/common-home-en/kb/articles/5427-how-do-i-create-an-fsdiag-file
