Hi
Had message that the VPN needs updating, accepted it and it encountered a problem!
Now the VPN will not start

Has anyone had this problem and how is it fixed?

Hello,
It looks like your installation contains "both" versions of the app. Or somehow is 'customized' to a some degree.
In one screenshot it is clearly (?) visible that the build version is 'latest' (25*), but in your settings with trusted networks it looks more like 'old' one (like 21* or whatever).
For example, on Android 9 and with very old version of F-Secure app - I can easily see variation of 'something went wrong' while around VPN feature. This is expected to be the case even for some "newer" builds, and where an "update" is expected: such as: Update Your F-Secure VPN by January 2, 2025
It is also strange that by making your wi-fi network trusted, you got VPN working. I mean, from the description of this 'old' functionality - the VPN should be disabled while you're on a trusted network, unless you manually connect.
However, since Android 16 is also mentioned, there is [Android] F-Secure Total Android VPN Stuck on "Connecting" with No Internet on Android 16 Devices (KB article about some difficulties after/with updating F-Secure Total app).
where resolution is even much more easier: ""Try turning VPN off and back on, If VPN still keeps failing to connect, restart your device. Once the device powers back on, open the Total app and try connecting again.""
But sounds that your set-up has some unique view..
// or as based on another topic - something was temporarily and internally-related to F-Secure rather than to your device and an ability to run VPN.

You can try the following procedure:
Checklist for Fixing F-Secure VPN Issues on Android 16
- Check App Version
Make sure you're using the latest F-Secure Total version:
Latest known version: 25.6.9835514
Go to Google Play Store > My apps > F-Secure Total and check for updates.
2. Clear App Cache and Storage
Go to Settings > Apps > F-Secure Total
Tap Storage & cache
Tap Clear cache and then Clear storage
Reboot your phone
Reopen F-Secure and reconfigure if needed
3. Check for Android System VPN Conflicts
Some Android features (like Private DNS or other VPN apps) can interfere:
Settings > Network & Internet > VPN → Make sure no other VPNs are listed or active
Settings > Network & Internet > Private DNS → Set to Off or Automatic
4. Check Permissions
Make sure F-Secure has the required permissions:
Settings > Apps > F-Secure Total > Permissions → Allow VPN, Network access, etc.
5. Contact F-Secure support via: https://www.f-secure.com/en/support
- Customer service can give you more detail information and ask you to send diagnostic logs if the issue persists

Normally the applications should inform the users if extra device permissions is needed in order to them working..

Well.In my pixel6a,f-secure 25.6,android 16 there is no such option in vpn-settings as "trusted networks".just
Looks like your device may still have more than one f-secure vpn profile, check settings—>network and internet—>vpn there should be only One vpn(F-Secure) profile after update.
At least in some cases and platforms, the F-secure update leaves remnants and definions of old applications on the devices and the end result is easily "mess and confusion". As far as I know, they are known to F-secure dev. team and on the urgent fix list, so we are still optimistic about it.
