Unlocking Windows/Chrome

Hello,

I would like to use F-Secure's password vault instead of the one built into Chrome, but I find it complicated to unlock.

Let me explain: I have created a secure password, but having to retype it every time is quite tedious.

At work, our password vault could be unlocked until the computer was shut down, and as a bonus, we could do this using Windows Hello and therefore via facial recognition, fingerprint, etc.

So I would like to know if:

1- Is it possible (or planned) to use Windows Hello for unlocking (via the Chrome plugin)? It would be easier than typing in the password (which takes a long time to type).

2- How can I unlock it for the day or until the PC is shut down?

There is an automatic lock option, but if I choose “after 1 week,” will my PC remain unlocked if it is put into sleep mode or shut down, or will it lock as soon as the PC is shut down?

I often put my computer to sleep during the day, but I would like the vault to remain unlocked until I shut it down.

Thank you

    My suggestions for your scenario

Since your workflow is pretty demanding (remote work, VPN, printing, etc) and you want convenience + security, here is what you could consider:

    • Because biometric unlock via Windows Hello isn’t supported yet, you might choose to use a shorter master password (balanced with security) or use a PIN-style unlock (if offered) just for convenience — though I didn’t find that F-Secure offers a PIN unlock on Windows version of vault.
    • If you’re comfortable with it, set the automatic lock to the longest possible interval (e.g., “after 1 week”) for daytime usage, and shut down manually when you finish your day (so you still lock for the overnight period). That mimics “unlock once in morning, work through day, shut down at evening”.
    • Ensure your machine is locked (Windows lock screen) when you step away, so that even if the vault remains unlocked, your machine is not unattended and accessible.
    • Monitor how the vault behaves when the PC goes to sleep/hibernate and wakes up: if it locks on wake-up you’ll know the limit.
    • Keep an eye on updates from F-Secure: since they have acknowledged the feature request for biometric unlock on Windows, it may arrive in future versions.
