Freedome subscription unexpectedly expired on 2nd IOS device

I renewed my subscription for a year on my iPad after an initial month. My iPad subscription still works. But I thought this was supposed to work for other IOS devices under the same Apple ID. I installed on my new iPhone. But today it quit working with a 'expired subscription ' message. Did I misunderstand? Or how do I download from App Store such that Freedome operates on my 1 year renewal?
