I renewed and paid to renew. The pop-up now says that I am unprotected but then I cannot log-in with my normal email address and password. Requests to change password do not get a response.

I have gone through your profile and I found out that you have 2 F-Secure SAFE accounts. To avoid confusion, I would suggest you delete the free trial account created with the other email address. When you login to your main account, you will see the devices that are unprotected. I have sent you a password reset email so you should be able to perform the reset now.
Check that you have no pending Windows Update, restart your computer and check if the computer status changes to protected but if not, then you need to reinstall F-Secure SAFE on the affected computers. See steps on how to reinstall here.
