Very High Upload bandwidth utilization from openvpn.exe

On 2 separate computers using Windows 10, I am seeing occasional very high UPLOAD bandwidth usage (several GB) from openvpn.exe outbound while using Freedome.   There is no other visible underlying process that is uploading data (I have separately used Glasswire and NetLimiter to track the traffic outbound).  This happens a couple times a month, seemingly randomly, sometimes when the computer is mostly idle.  Unfortunately I have not been able to capture it with Wireshark yet.  Any idea what could be causing this?   I've had a look at underlying windows processes, but I don't think that's it.
