Freedome vpn does not stay on

Freedome VPN does not stay on if not actively using some app that uses internet connection. When select the app again it says on and it it connects automatically again. Did not have this problem with my older phone Samsung Galaxy S 3.
Now I have Huawei P9 Lite, Android 6.0
