Can a .tmp file be a virus/trojan?

At each login I get the message that a virus is removed. It is a generic trojan 6667379 and the file is s1esa5s57og8ghga9.tmp in the Temp directory. I wonder whether a .tmp file itself can be a virus. If it is seen as a virus than "someone" should use this .tmp file as a virus or rename it to a .exe, so shouldn't this "someone" be removed? Or can I ignore this message?

"Generic" is generic, thus may not be virus in reality, upload that TMP to sas.f-secure.com

or, try to scan your computer with e.g. rootkit and virus and spyware scan
