Built-in virtual network adapter diagnostics and automated self-repair tool (F-Secure Total / VPN)

Description & Background:In F-Secure Total's VPN component, users frequently encounter an issue where the VPN fails to establish a connection—either getting stuck in an infinite connecting loop (spinning wheel) or completely dropping the device's internet traffic.

Upon closer technical inspection, the underlying root cause is often that the virtual network adapter (such as the Wintun driver or TAP adapter) in Windows or macOS has become corrupted, missing, or failed to re-register following an OS feature update. Currently, even running the official F-Secure Uninstallation Tool followed by a clean reinstall does not always restore or reinstall the missing virtual adapter.

The Problem with Current User Experience:F-Secure Total is targeted at everyday consumers under an "install and forget" model. An end-user should never be expected to:

  1. Open Device Manager to manually verify the state of virtual network interfaces.
  2. Search through program directories for .inf files and force-install drivers manually.
  3. Manage Windows Services (services.msc) or execute command-line network stack resets (netsh).

When the client UI fails to communicate a missing or unresponsive system driver and simply loops indefinitely on the connection screen, it gives the impression of a broken application with no actionable troubleshooting path for the user.

Proposed Solution (Feature Request):

  1. Pre-flight Adapter Diagnostics:
    • Prior to establishing a tunnel, the client should verify that the required virtual adapter and underlying services are present, registered, and operational.
    • If the adapter is missing or in an error state, the app should avoid an infinite loading state and immediately display an explicit error message (e.g., "VPN network adapter is missing or unresponsive").
  2. Built-in "Repair Network Adapter" Functionality (Self-Healing):
    • Provide a dedicated "Repair/Reinstall Adapter" option directly within the application settings or the error dialog. Triggering this with administrative privileges should automatically reset and reinstall the virtual interface.
    • Ensure the standalone Uninstallation Tool thoroughly flushes and removes any orphaned F-Secure driver references from the Windows Driver Store to prevent reinstall failures.

Implementing an automated self-healing mechanism would significantly improve product reliability, eliminate complex manual troubleshooting for everyday users, and reduce repetitive support ticket volume.
