Severe slowdown of NAS (Synology) access with F-Secure is running. Exclusion path ignored.

Hi,

I'm running Windows 1 0 22H2, F-Secure 26.6 and a Synology DS224+ with DSM 7.3.2-86009 Update 4. Same on my laptop, which has the same issues.

Whenever I try to view specific files (f.e. JPG, ZIP, yet not MP4) on my NAS there are severe slowdowns. The slowdown always happens when endpointprotection.exe tries to access these files and blocks access for (almost structurally) 17.8 seconds, 26.6, or 35.6 seconds. This is happening even while I have put the entire NAS in the exclusion folders in F-secure. It still tries to access these files, every time.

Turning off F-Secure seemed the only solution for a while, but I found the underlying culprit. I have NFS client installed in Windows. I do not use it for this NAS, but it got called by endpointprotection.exe every time attempting to find <accessed file>:Zone.Identifier:$DATA. Probably because it couldn't get all that it wanted through SMB (despite the NAS being excluded, again). NFS, not being available as fallback for this NAS, causes 8.9 second timeouts, twice per call, multiple times per file access. The only application that attempts this NFS fallback is F-Secure and it keeps trying it too, despite constant failure. It was hard to debug. I was close to just getting another virusscanner until I found this workaround, which is deactivating the NFS client, for now.

There would be no issue if excluded folders were respected and there would be no issue if a non-working NFS connection wasn't repeatedly attempted as fallback. I hope these issues can be fixed.

Kind Regards, Robin

    Hi @rschaap

Thank you for the detailed information, Robin. Your findings are very helpful for our investigation.

Could you please provide the relevant F-Secure diagnostic logs from the affected computer(s)? If possible, please also include screenshots showing the slowdown or any related F-Secure notifications or errors.

I’ll send you a DM so we can investigate this further. Any additional details, such as the exact file types or locations affected and the approximate time when the issue occurs, would also be helpful for our technical team.

    Thank you for your cooperation.
