F-Secure did not inform me that I wasn't protected...

edited December 2024 in Device Protection

I have a 2012 Mac Pro that seems unable to update beyond the Catalina (OS 10.15.7). My subscription renewal was due on 4/12/2024, so as usual I renewed early to protect myself and the other two family licensees. Their newer computers automatically updated, but mine continued to show the 'Subscription Expired' details (red spot on FS icon, request to renew, etc). I contacted FS Chat for assistance on 5/12/2024 and learned that Catalina not supported, and that I had to upgrade system to OS12+ or else FS won't work. My last automatic 'update' in late November suggested everything was working. My computer will not handle (or even offer me) any upgrade as it stands. It seems I've been paying for non existent protection for the past few years on my computer, though this was never brought to my attention. Any recommendations on how best to proceed from here without having to buy another new computer…Thank you.

    Hello @Jodb @Rocambole

    Thank you for your post and comment.

    @Jodb

    Thank you for sharing your concerns, and we’re sorry for the frustration this has caused. F-Secure stopped supporting macOS Catalina in February 2023 because we must align with the latest security standards. Unfortunately, on an unsupported OS like Catalina, F-Secure cannot receive updates, which reduces its ability to protect against newer threats.

    While the software may still appear functional, it cannot provide full protection against the latest threats due to missing updates and the OS’s own security vulnerabilities. We strongly recommend always updating your operating system to the latest supported version to maintain optimal security.

    It sounds like you are using an older older version of the app. We suggest you upgrade to the latest version. For more details, you may refer to this link: Update Your F-Secure VPN by January 2, 2025

    Thank you and have a lovely day.

    Hi Firmy,

    Thank you very much for your reply. Much appreciated. After watching numerous recommendations on You Tube, I took my computer to a non-Apple repair shop. I upgraded to 8GB RAM, and replaced the hard disc. Despite uploading an Open Legacy Patch, the computer couldn’t handle OS Sequoia and it crashed. It did however manage OS Sonoma. F-Secure now working again (after deleting/re-installing users, and protracted updates). Cost for parts/labour was $235CAD, which is much cheaper than buying a new Mac.
    Hopefully I’ll now get a few more years on my machine…🤞
