How to turn F-Secure OFF, or disable auto startup ?

Hello.

I recently bought a Freedome subscription. I use VPN only occasionally, I don't need it to be on 24/7. I am not using other F-Secure features.

F-Secure starts automatically whenever the computer is turned on, and there is no button to close it! This was not the case when Freedome still had a separate program…!

How do I turn off F-Secure and disable it from auto startup?

There seems to be other people asking this question too, but your "Community managers" are trying their best not to answer the question directly…

If this is not possible, be assured that this few months is the last I will ever pay for Freedome.

Dear jOnes. Your answer is still unsatisfying. Wonder how you earned your "forum legend" status if this is the quality of your answers?

I am asking, how to disable this program from auto start when Windows is turned on. I don't want F-Secure to be running in the background - I only want to start it when I need VPN, and to manually turn it on. And then turn F-Secure off once I am ready. This is my issue.

To others who might have the same issue, I have resolved this myself:

    • Press Win + R, enter "services.msc"
    • Find all F-Secure related rows
    • For all these, go to Properties and change from Automatically to Manually.

Next time you open F-Secure, it will complain, it will nag. Don't care about it.

I wish F-Secure cared more about the users freedom to control the settings.

Well The F-secure program will not start at all when you uninstall it,right ? After that you install ONLY F-Secure VPN.The uninstall tool cleans all previous f-secure installations and unnecessary files, registry entries and services from your win/mac platform,no further incompatibilities and strange behavior. And even the finest nagging ends😀

There is only one F-Secure program. There is no separate VPN program. Am I incorrect here? Please give me direct download link or instructions how to find it.

I have bought only VPN on F-Secure site. I have downloaded and installed what was given to me during this process.

    Dear JOnes.

I have followed your instructions. I uninstalled everything and went to the VPN site, where I already have a subscription. I then clicked "add new device" to download the program.

It downloads the same exact program. I had problems with.

You did NOT answer any questions. Instead, you give INCORRECT INFORMATION, and BAD SOLUTIONS.

Can you still not answer my original question? Please remember you can always say "I don't know", or "There is no such option for users". But perhaps you don't get imaginary internet that way?

Sorry about this "installation mesh",if you have allready a substriction for ex. F-Secure Total, you cannot install only F-secure VPN to the same id.In order to get just a standalone VPN installation to the allready paid product(device licence)it´s best you contact directly to customer service, they can do it manually, the my.f-secure.com portal is unable to do it.

"if you have allready a substriction for ex. F-Secure Total"

I only have VPN subscription. I already have standalone VPN installation. I do not have any other F-Secure programs or subscriptions.

How do I turn off standalone VPN program? NOT the VPN connection, the program. There doesn't seem to be an option for that?

How do I disable autostart on computer turn on for the Standalone VPN program? There doesn't seem to be an option for that?

Is the F-Secure VPN program really limited and wants to always stay running? Why?

Thank you for clarification of your situation and substriction, platform is probably Windows

Allthough the product F-Secure VPN has been presented as a product of it¨s own many control limitations still apply.

You can allways make a feature request of this if you find them to be incomplete

In order to end this pretty useless discussion,AI summary:

Where does the misleading information come from?

F-Secure uses the term “F-Secure VPN” in its documentation and marketing as if it were:

    • lightweight
    • standalone
    • limited strictly to VPN functionality
    • fully under user control

👉 On Windows, this is not technically true.

What does “VPN only” actually mean on Windows?

When you install F-Secure VPN on Windows:

    • you are installing the full F-Secure Home application framework
    • this includes:
      • multiple Windows services
      • automatic startup
      • background processes that cannot be shut down from the UI
    • the only difference compared to F-Secure Total is:
      • which features are licensed, not what is installed

➡️ “VPN only” = a licensing model, not an application architecture

This distinction is not made clear in the official documentation.

How do the instructions mislead users?

    Typical problems in F-Secure’s guides:

    • they explain how to turn the VPN connection on or off,
while users are asking how to stop the application from running
    • “Installing only the VPN will behave differently”
    • they do not disclose that:
      • the application cannot be fully exited
      • autostart cannot be officially disabled
      • background services always remain active

This confusion is clearly visible in the community thread you shared:
the responder assumes a “lightweight VPN client” that does not exist.

Is this intentional or just poor documentation?

    Most likely both:

    • from a business standpoint:
      • a single unified application is easier to maintain
      • it reduces support complexity
    • from a documentation standpoint:
      • user expectations are not managed
      • key differences from competitors are left unstated

➡️ The end result is misleading, even if not legally false.

    Conclusion

    Yes —
F-Secure’s instructions give Windows users a false impression of a “VPN-only installation”, because:

    • the technical reality does not match the implied promise
    • users are not informed in advance about lifecycle and startup limitation
