latest vpn update with hydra works for a bit, then internet dies...

On 7 april 2025 I installed latest vpn update (f-secure oneclient (x64) 6.1.407) on my win11 pc, and was using internet with hydra protocol in the evenings. Each of the 2 nights since the update, while I was asleep, my internet stopped working. The first time it even crashed my firefox browser, which left a bug report waiting to be sent.
Windows network troubleshooting said I have a faulty ethernet card. Funny thing is, i was also running a virtual win10 pc (via hyper-v) on the same box at the time (i alswys do), and its internet connection was working fine while the other (win11 host) was dead!
The only way to recover was to reboot my win11 pc. I'm now using wireguard protocol. Thoughts?

Hello @whiskerubs
Thank you for reporting this issue to us and for sharing the details of your experience with the latest VPN update. We regret to hear that your internet connection is being disrupted, and we truly appreciate the time you've taken to describe what’s been happening.
To help us investigate this further with our product team, could you kindly provide a bit more information? Specifically, we’d like to know the current version of the F-Secure VPN installed on your Windows 11 PC, as well as your Windows version and build number. Please also let us know which VPN location was connected when the issue occurred.
Additionally, does the issue only happen after a prolonged idle time, or does it also occur during regular use? When the internet connection drops, is the VPN still shown as connected, or does it disconnect automatically? Are there any visible error messages in the VPN interface or in your Windows network settings?
It would also be helpful to know if any recent changes were made to your network settings, firewall, or Hyper-V configuration. Could you also confirm the network setup for the virtual machine (e.g., NAT, bridged, or external virtual switch)? Lastly, if possible, please check the Windows Event Viewer and let us know if there are any related errors or warnings at the time the issue occurs.
As a temporary workaround, we recommend using the OpenVPN protocol, which you mentioned has provided a more stable connection so far. This can help maintain connectivity while we continue looking into the issue with the other protocols.
These details will greatly assist us in identifying the root cause and supporting our product team in reproducing and resolving the issue.
Thank you again for your cooperation and patience. We’ll do our best to get this sorted for you.

same story with wireguard today. internet on physical pc stopped working while i was away, and virtual pc still had internet. switching vpn off brought internet back, and it continued to work after i switched it back on with openvpn selected. at least my pc did not need a reboot this time.
how to roll back the update?
-
I have similar kind of problem. When I got rid of my protocol issue (fixed with reinstallation) I was happy about couple of days and then the new VPN core was pushed to my computer.
The problem is that if my laptop is unused for a while and power save aka sleep mode kicks in the vpn connection freezes and when laptop wakes up and connection should be restored it just most of the time jams on "Connecting…" part. If I restart my computer then I am able activate VPN connection again but it is not very practical to have to restart your computer everytime after laptop has been in the power save (sleep) mode.
Should I then try again reinstalling the whole F-Secure Total suite or what is the solution? I am starting to get frustrated with these constant problems concerning VPN service. 😕

tonight internet stopped while i was working on my pc with openvpn. it did not need a reboot to revive it. internet kept working on virtual pc, which uses a virtual switch connected to external network. i have made no changes to my pc recently except update f-secure vpn software.
anything specific to look for in eventviewer?
-
Hello @veps @whiskerubs
Thank you for your reply.
@whiskerubs in the Event Viewer, we recommend looking for any network-related errors or warnings around the time the issue occurs. Specifically, check the System Log for events related to the network adapter, VPN connection, or any device driver issues. Also, look in the Application Log for any errors or warnings from the F-Secure VPN or related processes. Additionally, the Security Log might contain relevant entries if there are problems with access permissions or network security. To make it easier, you can filter the logs by the time the issue occurred, which will help pinpoint any events that correspond to the disruptions you're experiencing.
Once you’ve checked the logs, feel free to share any relevant findings with us, as this will help us diagnose the issue more effectively.
Anyway, we would love to investigate the issue further, @whiskerubs @veps kindly generate an fsdiag for us to check the issue. Kindly do not share the fsdiag publicly in this forum to protect your privacy and security. I have sent you a private message, do share with me the fsdiag thru the private message.
Looking forward to hearing from you.
Thank you and have a lovely day.

Hello there!
I've been a loyal F-Secure customer for over 20 years. However, this 25.3 problematic update that ultimately required a full reinstallation of the software.
F-Secure Total 25.2 was running on a 2018 HP desktop PC with Windows 10 22H2, FS VPN service is on, connecting to Japan through an OpenVPN portal. On the evening of 9th April, F-Secure Total updated to 25.3.
This morning, I discovered that my internet connection was down. My browsers were unable to connect to any web pages, in my case:
- My LAN IP address was correctly assigned, and I was able to ping my router successfully.
- F-Secure had updated to version 25.3 on 9th April, but the update process appeared incomplete. The software indicated that the last update was on 9th April at 10:45 PM, and it was unable to perform further updates. The VPN page on both main and seting are blanked, a message indicated that an update was still in progress.
- In Network Neighborhood, only my Wi-Fi and LAN connections were visible. The previous F-Secure virtual adapter for the VPN is gone.
I attempted several restarts of my computer, router, and modem, but the problem is unable to solved. It make me no choice but to reinstalled F-Secure Total.
Understand that F-Secure products are entering a new phase in 2024-2025. It's important that these transitions are seamless and don't disrupt the user experience. If the issue was related to the Previous version of VPN, perhaps a prompt for a system restart would be better.
Thank you for your time and attention to this matter! I hope this issue is resolved and does not happen again. I was also wondering if there's a way to check the update logs, similar to how it was done in the 19.x versions. I found it useful to have a .txt file available on the product update page, outlining the specific changes and versions.
Cheers,
yeungmic

Hello,
I have the same VPN connection problem as reported at the beginning of this topic.
F-Secure VPN was updated to - F-SECURE ONECLIENT 6.1.407 - on 04/07/25 at 12:18 pm.
My PC runs Windows 11 Home Single Language - Version 24H2 - build 26100.3775
I have already restarted my PC, router and modem.
I have already tried connecting to all available locations without success.
Please, I await a solution as soon as possible.
Thank you. -
Same problem, same story.
Net connection is lost after PC has not been used for a while (10-20 min?). Unfortunately this does not happen always.
My PC is connected to a dock using USB-C. If I activate Wifi, Internet connection works with F-Secure VPN active. After that, if I disconnect Wifi, Ethernet connection sometimes comes back.
No other VPN software is installed.
Rebooting does not help. Windows shows that Internet is connected, but but apps or browsers cannot connect. F-Secure VPN seems to be in a starting stage, even though I had deactivated it before reboot.
I have now removed F-Secure temporarily. -

Hello @veps
Thank you for providing the logs. After reviewing them, we can confirm that the VPN initially connected successfully but later disconnected and was unable to reconnect.
As a workaround, kindly run the following commands:
net stop fsvpnsvc
net stop fsvpnextsvc
net start fsvpnextsvc
net start fsvpnsvcIf the VPN remains stuck in the “Connecting…” state, we recommend uninstalling it using our Uninstallation Tool and then reinstalling it.
Important: If you're using the Password Vault, please ensure that your passwords are synced to another device or exported before uninstalling to prevent any data loss.
Please let us know the outcome after trying these steps. We're happy to assist further if needed.
Thank you.

Hello Firmy,
I've noticed that sometimes when I disconnect from the F-Secure VPN, it corrupts my internet connection. I then have to manually turn my router off and on, or use the commands
ipconfig /release
followed byipconfig /renew
to get back online. This issue has occurred on the Hydra portal and is quite frustrating. My PC connects directly to the router kill switch is off, having the fsdiag ready, would you please assist me in investigating this issue?
Thank you!

We recommend trying the workaround mentioned in the comment to help resolve the issue. Please let us know if the problem persists afterwards, we’re happy to assist further.
Hello @Secpoint2000
To assist us in investigating further, please let us know if the VPN disconnection issue continues to occur consistently after reinstalling F-Secure Total 25.3. Additionally, if you’ve experienced this behaviour with other VPN protocols besides Hydra, that information would be greatly appreciated.
I’ve sent you a private message with instructions. Kindly share the fsdiag file there.
Thank you, and wishing you a wonderful day.

I am still having this problem (Win 11), Hydra, Killswitch on. Updated F-secure.
Wifi connection goes down when computer sleeps but also at other times while not in sleep mode, recently during active zoom calls (in the middle of guided meditations, grrrr).
I have to turn VPN off, reconnect wifi and then turn VPN on again. (And reconnect to zoom call)
Just found the suggested workarounds here: use OpenVPN and/or Killswitch Off.
Are we still supposed to use these? Or can the problem be solved by doing something else?
No update here since the previous comment on April 26 but problem still ongoing. -
Update: Noticed today, the same problem with OpenVPN.
Updated my computer software (Dell), with several restarts yesterday.
Checked and updated the VPN.
This never used to happen before this year (can't remeber when it started, but sometime this spring) and I've had Freedome and then F-secure for many, many years. (Not happening on my Android phone.)
So, anyone? This is getting really, really, really annoying. It's happening all the time, also when not in sleep mode. I have to keep turning off VPN and restarting Wifi connection and then turning on VPN again.
Is it just time to get another VPN instead?
Subscription payed for until Oct 1, 2026. -
@Katwi
Disabling kill switch as a workaraound is news to me, luckily I read your post.
The recurring loss of connectivity started in March, and was fixed in May update, as far as I can tell. After July´s update the problem reappeared, and I for one have been waiting a fix for two months now.
If I proceed to connect to my hotspot with kill switch enabled and try to connect to a website, let´s say https://whatismyipaddress.com for example, the page loads just fine, but the connection is made with me real ip address, which really isn´t a desirable feature to have in a VPN client. After a while it connects to the VPN server, and reloading the page verifies that my traffic is tunneled through the VPN.
I found out, that the least amount of dropped connections happen while using OpenVPN(TCP), which means I have to reconnect in every 15-30 minutes or so. It bugs me that time connected varies depending on some unknown variable, maby the position of the sun? I don´t know.
If I´m at the computer and notice that the connection has been dropped, I can reconnect by toggling the VPN slider off/on. If not, the connection to my hotspot also disconnects, and I have to a) disable vpn b) reconnect to hotspot c) enable VPN.
If I don´t disable the VPN first, it doesn´t connect at all, despite the reconnected hotspot (internet access).
Other way to establish a connection to VPN server in latter situation is to open settings and switch the protocol to something else, and then back again without closing the settings windows.
I´m afraid I have no comfort to give you in this time of crappy coding, but insted I wanted you to let you know, that after disabling the kill switch, my VPN connection has been up and running for several hours now, which is unheard of post July´s update.
I´d suggest you try my settings(OpenVPN(TCP), kill switch disabled) but I gather you haver already tried everything. I´m also on a different platform(W10), so there´s that too.
I´m also starting to lean towards another service provider, because I really didn´t sign up for unfixable connection problems that have lasted almost a half a year in total with no end in sight. -
Thank you so much for responding. 🙏🧡
Not much activity here since April so I thought it was just me.I turned the killswitch off for the first time last night. When I woke my laptop up today the wifi turned on automatically but not the VPN.
Had to turn it on manually.
Also, I don't think having the Killswitch off is desirable.
I have tried OpenVPN instead of Hydra but there was no difference.
Also marking my network as secure (from the start) has made no diiference.
It all works fine on my Andoid phone.
So, I guess I will for now just have to remember to turn the VPN off during live meditation sessions on zoom, on computer. Ha ha, that's not going to work. -
Does anyone have a permanent solution for this?
I find it ridiculous that I have to restart my laptop nearly every time it's been in sleep mode for even a minute. Turning VPN off and then on again worked for a time but not anymore. I seem to have this issue with Hydra, WireGuard, and OpenVPN. Now Hydra won't connect even after restart. Full uninstall and reinstall did not help. This has been an issue for a couple months. I'm so done with F-Secure rolling out poorly tested updates. Are there possibly some fixes to earlier connectivity issues that might be messing with this? Because every update has broken something that has needed manual correcting.

At the time being lastest version of F-Secure(win/mac) is 25.8 and is still suffering of VPN issues at least in some installations.Next update(25,9,all platforms)will be published at the end of September or at the beginning of October, hope it corrects most of these "glitches".It also looks like nobody at the communitys moderator side asks(with PM) for detailed fsdiag files for further investigation.Moderator support in English side of the community is almost silent.Best but not nessessary the cheapest way is to avoid these VPN problems with f-secure products is to disable the f-secure vpn and use other provider product for vpn.Of cource you can allways contact directly:
