F-secure critical error. asks to restart.

This is becoming a rather annoying recurring error. Every 5 minutes (or 2 hours if I chose so) the F-secure app asks to restart because of a critical error. The critical error suggests there is a conflict with another program, but the program listed is F-secure. So is the antivirus fighting itself?

I've tried restarts. Does not work.

I've tried quick reinstall. Does not work.

I've tried a complete manual delete and then reinstall. worked for 2 days, then the problem reappeared.

Please help, this is beyond annoying.

    Dear F-Secure team!

Exactly same behaviour starting today. Upgrade to 25.6 did not change anything.

Where to send the fsdiag file?

I would think that if the "sidegrade support" feature had more accurately detected conflicts and old versions on the device during the software update/installation phase, there would have been fewer of these fsdiag transmissions, but maybe one rainy day this will happen.😎

    Dear F-Secure team!

After trying reasonable steps without success, I think the problem is related to "Device Protection" update failure.

"Device Protection" update fails even when "Device Protection" is turned off.

I can see, that in this situation only way to solve it, is total removal and clean install of F-Secure. But I would not start it before you confirm, that the issue should be solved already.

Yes indeed I found the workaround - it is disabling IPv6 in your TCP/IP settings.

The hint was from some other help forum post, which I can not find quickly right now.

Of course this is only workaround - there are many situations, where disabling IPv6 permanently is not possible.

    Hi,

Same problem - disabling IPv6 did not help - started 29.06.25. Seems that the 'Device Protection' update failure has been hanging arround half a year and still no solution. Version 25.6 did not bring any help to WIN11 equ, no problems with WIN10 equ so far.

    Hi,
Your - Firmy - advice did work…so far.
Release license, un-install (windows uninstall - fs-uninstallation tool is for other programs as read.me text says?), re-boot, log-in MyFsec, add device, click click click… Now up and running. 'Device Protection' updates as planned.

    Thank you for the help.

    Danke

Exactly the same problem as Alfred and Nickolas because it started end of June for me as well. I am about to remove the whole thing (if it's possible) and rely on built in Windows security instead because Win security reports everything ok. I thought it was due to me installing LibreOffice to be able to read some old Word files. The new Windows policy won't let me do it with Wordpad. I regretted my install and removed LibreOffice (prev. OpenOffice). But no way, it's catch 22, can't stop the interruptions. Pity I paid for 3 years and 2 more to go. The message in Norwegian is: "Omstart kreves. Feil i virus- og spionprogrambeskyttelse: datamaskinen er ikke beskyttet. Start datamaskinen på nytt. Husk å lagre arbeidet ditt." I would not be surprised if I got some spyware and it tries to turn off F-secure. But there should be a way to tackle it.

    Hello @Nickolas @access24

Welcome to the F-Secure Community, and thank you for bringing this to our attention.

Based on the submitted fsdiag files from other users, our analysis indicates that the issue may be caused by conflicting software installed on the same device. We kindly recommend checking to ensure that no other antivirus or security software is installed alongside F-Secure, as multiple antivirus programs running simultaneously can conflict with one another. This may lead to false detections or cause the software to malfunction.

If no other antivirus software is present, we suggest performing a clean reinstallation of the F-Secure application using the F-Secure uninstallation tool. This will ensure that all components of the software are removed before installing the latest version. You can follow the instructions from this support page.

Important: Before uninstalling, make sure that the Password Vault is either synchronized to another device or exported to avoid data loss.

Please let us know how the process goes.

Thank you, and have a lovely day.

    Hi @Nickolas

    From your post:

"As a workaround until F-Secure solves the problem, the service desk gave me the tip to log out of F-Secure completely and then log in again. That worked".

When you say log out completely, from the desktop app, then relog back in?

And thank you for posting the workaround :)

I've noticed that my main PC started to do out of blue similar, where Device Protection fails to update and refuses to turn itself on even after restart. I haven't installed any new softwares to PC in weeks and I've noticed some of the F-secure website help pages are giving me certification error page. Is it possible that it's in F-Secures end, as there is lately quite few posts about this issue?

Thanks for the suggestions. I removed the whole thing from my pc. Sometimes I may try again, but not right now. The mails from this forum ended up in junk mail so I didn't see them till this morning.

It's quite right that Windows Defender (or what it's called) is a competing security app. I remember that virus protection in Defender was turned off, so also Windows complained about lacking security. So I switched it on again. The messages from F-secure about restarting kept coming every 5 minutes (or 2 hours). So it could help deactivating some Windows protection. May be that also will happen if I reinstall F-secure. But I am a little skeptical since I also got the restart messages while Windows antivirus was switched off (I got double warnings for a short while).

My funny name here is I wasn't allowed to enter my normal first name or variations of it. Since I'm planning on going back to using MS Access (now the 2024 version) for solving programming tasks, I chose that name. He he.

If you have Windows 11, and constantly have the F-Secure restart warning popping up when you start your computer, Microsoft Defender Antivirus may be on and causing interference with F-Secure Antivirus, causing the problem. This may also be stopping F-Secure from updating antivirus data in the F-Secure program.

Try turning off Microsoft Defender Antivirus. Here's how:

How to Turn Off Windows Defender: Quick Steps

    1. Press the Windows key and type "security".
    2. Click Windows Security in the search results.
    3. Go to Virus & threat protection > Virus & threat protection settings.
    4. Click the switch next to "Real-time protection."
    5. Click Yes to confirm.

    Then restart.

It solved the problem for me.

Hi, I've got the same problem, device restart required due to error with device protection. Have tried uninstalling the app then reinstalling, still the same error. Have even used the F-Secure uninstall app, then reinstalled again, but still the same problem persists. I'm still using windows 10 - Has anybody got a way for a non techi person to sort this out>

  • access24
    access24 Posts: 3 Observer

Yes, it was probably a collision between F-Secure and MS Defender.

Hi, have the same problem with one Windows 10 PC since around 3-4 weeks.

All other PCs running F-Secure don't have that problem.

Even checked: I can not identify that any other Virus protection is installed or running. I saw in the Eventlogs something about Windows Defender, But setup says it is turned off.

Can somebody please look into the reason?

    Kind Regards, Harald
