Why do I need to install
profiles on Freedome for iOS?
F-Secure Freedome uses Apple iOS built-in VPN functionality to implement the secure tunnel between the end-point and the F-Secure service. Apple limits the control over their build-in functionality to the minimum. This means in practice that F-Secure, like any other personal VPN provider, can offer a VPN service only by providing a configuration profile that sets up the encrypted connection. The connection can then be managed by using the operating system's native controls or by setting a new profile. As the iOS native VPN controls are seen as quite complicated, we've chosen to implement the turning on and off of the application through re-installation of the profile.
When an end-user switches the virtual location, the VPN connection is re-established to another server. This requires us also to re-configure the connection every time, which in practice means installing a new profile.
