F-Secure Sense is F-Secure's cyber defense solution for smart homes combining hardware and software in a unique way. You can think of Sense as an advanced, high speed secure router consisting of a physical device - the Sense router - and a software app - the Sense app. The physical device creates a secure network in the home protecting all the devices in your home network, such as laptops, phones and tablets, and newer Internet of Things (IoT) devices; for example, smart thermostats or smoke alarms. The app -that you install on a smartphone or tablet - allows you to set up, configure and monitor your Sense router. With the app, you can monitor the security and privacy protection status in your home network at a glance. For those devices that leave the home network, such as laptops, tablets, and smartphones, you install a lightweight security software that protects the devices no matter where they are. With F-Secure Sense, your connected devices are protected from various online threats, as well as keeping your digital privacy intact by preventing online profiling and tracking. The product takes full advantage of the next generation capabilities of F-Secure's Security Cloud. Threats are blocked aided by machine-learning algorithms based on their reputation and behavior; they are "sensed" instead of "scanned".

F-Secure Sense is a secure router that sits between your modem and your connected devices in the home network. Both cabled (Ethernet) and Wi-Fi connections are supported on both sides of the Sense router. To set up, configure and operate the Sense router, either an Android or iOS mobile device is required. You start by installing the Sense app on your Android or iOS smartphone or tablet, which guides you through the initial setup. During the setup, you connect the Sense router to your existing home router and create a new, secure Wi-Fi network. Once you have the new network up and running, you move all your connected devices to this new network. Your smartphone or tablet acts as a "controller" enabling you to see the security and privacy protection status in your secure network. For those devices that leave the home network, such as laptops, tablets and smartphones, the Sense app provides protection for your mobile devices as well. Other devices that cannot have user-installed software, such as your smart TV or security camera are protected by the Sense router by monitoring incoming and outgoing on the network level. When you purchase F-Secure Sense, you are also purchasing a subscription-based protection service that provides you with constant threat analysis and continuous updates to both your Sense router and app. As these updates take place in the background, this means you are protected from the latest threats with no action needed on your part. With F-Secure Sense, we have created a security product for the connected home that provides real-time protection for your devices at home and on the go. We have moved security analysis to the cloud, so that we can perform deep analysis even in the home environment. Our teams of dedicated anti-malware and digital security experts are constantly investigating the latest threats and trends to keep our products and services at the forefront of technology. Coupled with a high-end hardware router and current Wi-Fi technology, F-Secure Sense analyzes network traffic in the home and prevents attacks from ever reaching the various devices in your home network, which may include anything from your PCs, laptops, smartphones to Smart TVs and Smart Locks. But that's not all there is. F-Secure Sense comes with a lightweight security software that talks to the Sense router and complements the protection by giving a security overview of what's happening on your various devices within the home network. On Windows, for example, this software includes a new generation of DeepGuard, F-Secure's highly effective cloud-enabled blocker based on behavior that observes applications in their real environment and blocks them before they can do any harm. In a nutshell, F-Secure Sense combines the key cyber security technologies in a unique way in the product: Security gateway: Both inbound and outbound traffic is protected by Sense, acting as a security gateway. For devices that leave the home network, the Sense app - a lightweight security software - protects you and your device on the go. Device protection: With the lightweight Sense app installed on your devices, managing and maintaining your device security is made much easier. A Sense subscription covers all of your devices in your present home network, as well as any new devices you may add in the future. Security from the cloud: This ensures that you always have the latest protection in your home network.

A connected home has a high number of devices connected to the Internet and/or to each other. Internet connectivity has become a norm, and more and more products and devices are equipped with technologies that allow them to connect to the Internet. A research study carried out by Gartner Research* predicts that the global number of devices connected to the Internet will reach 26 billion by 2020. Some researchers forecast a figure as high as 100 billion IoT (Internet of Things) devices by the end of this decade. An average home already today has more than five devices connected to the Internet. If the above predictions come true, in the near future, our homes will have more than 50 devices simultaneously connected to the Internet. By design, traditional security software is not able to handle the protection of all these devices. This is where F-Secure Sense steps in. It is able to protect every device in your home network, be it a mobile device, a desktop device or a smart device that you cannot install security software on. Furthermore, with the Sense app, the devices that you carry with you when you leave your home are also protected. * Middleton, P., Kjeldsen, P., & Tully, J. (2013, November 18). Forecast: The Internet of Things, Worldwide, 2013. Gartner Research.

F-Secure Sense is designed to serve your smart home with any number of connected devices that belong to your household and run in your home network. This means that your Sense router does not limit the amount of devices you can have connected to it. There may be other limitations, however, in your own home network, for example the number of IP addresses allowed, that could restrict the amount of devices you can connect to the Sense router.

Product development is progressing, but it has been slowed down by a few bumps in the road.   The team has agreed that cutting corners is not an option because we want to release Sense as a product we envisioned it to be -- nothing less than a game-changer for consumers and the security industry, and something that each of us developing it can be tremendously proud of.   These few extra months are required to further fine tune and test the product in its current beta phase to make sure all of its features work flawlessly, as providing incomplete security is the same as not providing security at all.

F-Secure Sense works with most IPTV-based pay TV services, such as Sonera Viihde and Elisa Viihde. Sense, however, only protects the devices that connect to the Internet via the Sense router in your home network. Some IPTV set-ups use a separate set-top box that needs to be connected directly to the modem/router in your home, otherwise the pay TV service won't work. In this scenario, the set-top box is not connected to the Sense router, which means that the set-top box and its network traffic is not protected by Sense. Some other IPTV set-ups have the IPTV functionality embedded in the modem/router. In this case, there is no separate IPTV set-top box, so your set-up and protection with Sense works in the same way as it would without IPTV.

No, not at the moment. Currently, F-Secure Sense does not support multiple Service Set Identifiers (SSIDs). However, if you still have your previous Wi-Fi network available - even if the Sense router connects through it, you can use this network as a guest network. If your guest has connected to your Wi-Fi network before, their device will most likely connect to this network automatically.

No, your data traffic doesn't get sent to F-Secure. To enable us to offer you the best protection, we need to check some parts of your data traffic. For example, based on the URL, we check that the websites you want to visit are not harmful, or we check that the files and apps you download don't contain viruses or are otherwise harmful. This analysis takes place in the Sense router, as well as in the Sense app on your device, if applicable. That is, the analysis is done locally in your home network as much as possible. If the local analysis proves inconclusive and the file or app may pose a threat, a sample of the file or app is sent to our Security Cloud for further analysis, anonymously and fully encrypted. For more information, see Security Cloud. Related information What is Security Cloud?

Within this 3-tier system, the Sense app has several functions as follows: It is required for the set-up and configuration of the Sense router. It enables constant monitoring of your network. Unlike other routers, the Sense router does not have a web interface. Access to the router is gained solely via the app, making it convenient for you to access your Sense network information wherever you are. It provides on-the-go protection for supported devices that go outside the Sense network. It adds an extra layer of protection within your Sense network for those devices that can run the app. With the Sense app installed on your Windows PC, the app provides protection for your Windows PC against malware distributed on a USB memory stick, for example.
