For mobile data connections, security updates are always downloaded when you are in your home operator's network by default. However, the updates are suspended when you visit another operator's network. This is because the prices of connections may vary between operators, for example, in different countries. You might consider keeping this setting unchanged, if you want to save bandwidth and possibly, also costs, during your visit. Note: The mobile data setting applies only to mobile broadband connections. When the computer is connected to a fixed or wireless network, the product is automatically updated. To change the preferred update option for mobile connections: Right-click the product icon in the system tray. A pop-up menu appears. Select Open common settings. The Common settings dialog opens. From the left navigation, select Connection. Select the preferred update option for mobile connections: You have the following options: Never - Updates are not downloaded when you use mobile broadband. Only in my operator network - Updates are always downloaded in your home operator's network. When you visit another operator's network, the updates are suspended. We recommend that you select this option to keep your security product up to date at expected costs. Always - Updates are always downloaded, no matter what network you use. Select this option if you want to make sure that the security of your computer is always up to date regardless of the costs. Note: If you want to decide separately every time you exit your home operator's network, select Ask before roaming in a new network. To confirm the changes, click OK. Note: You need administrative rights to change the settings. Related information How do I configure the SAFE network connection settings on my PC?

Usually there is no need to change the default settings, but you can configure how the computer is connected to the Internet so that you can receive updates automatically. To change the Internet connection settings: Right-click the product icon in the system tray. A pop-up menu appears. Select Open common settings. The Common settings dialog opens. From the left navigation, select Connection. On the HTTP proxy list, select whether or not your computer uses a proxy server to connect to the Internet. Note: Your Internet service provider may offer or require you to use a proxy. A proxy acts as an intermediary between your computer and the Internet. It intercepts all requests to the Internet to see if it can fulfill the request using its cache. Proxies are used to improve performance, filter requests, and hide your computer from the Internet to improve security. You have the following options: Select Do not use if your computer is connected to the Internet directly. Select Use the browser's settings to use the same HTTP proxy settings that you have configured in your web browser. Select Custom settings and then click Configure to configure your HTTP proxy settings manually. To confirm the changes, click OK. Note: You need administrative rights to change the settings. Two-step verification is a feature that adds an extra layer of security to your My F-Secure account. This additional layer makes sure that no one can log in as you, even if that person has discovered your password. When you or anyone else tries to log in to your account, two-step verification asks you for the two things that only you know and have: your password and a unique security code. The security code you need is generated using authentication software, such as Google Authenticator or Duo Mobile, which you can install on your mobile device. When two-step verification is enabled, a security code is needed every time you log in. The mobile app provides this security code. In the two-step verification feature in your My F-Secure account, there is also a set of recovery codes that you can save separately. These codes ensure that you can access your account without the authentication app; for example, in the unfortunate event you lose the mobile device that generates the security code. Note: Remember to keep these codes safe and make sure that only you can access them. You can only use each code once and in the order that they are listed.

Question What is gaming mode? Answer You can optimize the product's use of your computer's system resources by turning on the gaming mode. Computer games often require a lot of system resources to run smoothly. The gaming mode frees up more system resources to handle games that are running on your computer by reducing the product's impact on your computer's CPU and network consumption, while maintaining the essential functionality of the product. For example, automatic updates and other operations that can cause high CPU and network usage are suspended while gaming mode is turned on. In addition, no notifications or action center popups are shown while gaming mode is turned on. Critical notifications are shown if they require immediate attention or interaction, but other notifications are only shown when you exit gaming mode. This also applies to any other full-screen applications, for example when you are viewing a presentation, slideshow or video in full-screen mode, even when gaming mode is turned off. Question Why is F-Secure using a network installer for downloading and installing the product? Answer F-Secure uses the small network installer for the following reasons:   Thanks to the small size of the network installer, the initial download is quicker than ever. The network installer takes over the downloading of additional components, thus making the installation also more reliable. The installation of the products is now also faster because only the required product components will be downloaded and installed. The latest version is always installed. This means that the user doesn't need to upgrade the product after installation. This article in other languages: Finnish, Swedish, German, French, Japanese, Italian, Danish, Norwegian, Dutch, Polish

Question Why should I use different user accounts for my computer? Answer We recommend that you set up a separate Windows user account for each family member. When each computer user has their own Windows user account, you can set different permissions for each. Then you can, for example, limit when and how many hours your kids can browse the internet. You can also limit the content and web sites that they can access.   Only someone with administrative access rights is allowed to change the product settings for the various Windows user accounts. For example, parents can have administrative access rights, and children can have normal access rights for their Windows user accounts.   This article in other languages: Finnish, Swedish, German, French, Japanese, Italian, Danish, Norwegian, Dutch, Polish

Question Why is the second scan sometimes faster or slower than the first scan? Answer A full computer scan scans all hard drives for malware, such as spyware, viruses and rootkits. The second full computer scan will be significantly faster because only the files that have changed will be scanned.   If an archive has not changed between scans, then it will not be touched in the second scan. If the archive contains 100 files, then the number of scanned files will be 100 less in the next scan.   New virus definition update and computer restart reset the scan cache. This means that the first scan after the reset scans all files again and takes a longer time. The following scans will then be faster again. Symptoms F-Secure Anti-Virus reports an infection and states that it cannot automatically remove the infected files. Instead you will be asked to remove the files manually. In addition, in some cases the reported files cannot be found (anymore) on the system. Diagnosis When an F-Secure security product reports anything malicious on your computer it has already detected and stopped it, preventing it from causing any harm to your system or your data. Our security software  will not remove infected files under some circumstances, they will however do no more harm than wasting your disk space and cause additional virus warnings whenever you or a system process is accessing that file.   Reasons for not deleting an infected file can be:   File is an important system file and removing it would render your computer unusable. We prevent the malware embedded in those files from causing any harm your system or your data, so you will be protected despite the frequent virus warning you will get whenever the infected file is executed, or otherwise accessed. The file is inside an archive. In that case we would have to delete the complete archive to remove it, including all clean files therein. The file is a temporary file created by an application, like browser downloads in progress, network streams and similar. Those files are usually locked by the application creating them, which means they cannot be opened or executed to do their damage, but also not deleted by F-Secure Anti-Virus at that point. Those files are then either replaced with a permanent version or automatically discarded when the process is finished. Those are the cases where the files cannot be located on the system when trying to remove them manually. Solution It is very likely that your system is clean and safe but to be absolutely sure, run a manual full computer scan:   Update the virus definitions manually to make sure F-Secure Anti-Virus has the latest database updates installed. Run a full computer scan from the Computer Security > Tools > Advanced scan menu. Advanced heuristics are by default enabled, please keep it that way or if you changed that setting please enable it again. This will allow for a more thorough scan and is highly recommended especially if you suspect an infection.   For extra safety you can run our OnlineScanner.  For more information on Online Scanner, visit the Online Scanner product page.   This article in other languages: Finnish, Swedish, German, French, Japanese, Italian, Danish, Norwegian, Dutch, Polish

Summary   This article explains why more spyware is occasionally found in the command-line and scheduled scans than in the manual scans that are started through the user interface.   Description   The command-line scanner and the scheduled scanning occasionally find more spyware than the manual scanning that is started through the user interface. The command-line scanner and the scheduled scanning methods are related because the scheduled scanning tasks use the command-line scanner (fsav.exe).   The reason for finding more spyware is that scheduled scanning runs under the Local System account, whereas the manual scanning runs under the account to which user has logged in. Unlike the regular user account, the Local System account has access to folders such as the System Restore folder.
