If you have a smartphone or tablet, try from that. Don't know if the SAFE portal works from those, but if you have one just try and see.

ps. I searched the net for the certificate error you got and most of the hits for people having those problems were running Internet Explorer 8 which is a very old version, and the latest supported version for Windows XP. So if you have XP I think you should consider getting a newer Windows version.

Re: How to install F-Secure SAFE on your PC - for Virgin Media customers

Bearing in mind that Microsoft will be withdrawing support for Windows XP in a few months, I wonder if F-Secure, and other software companies will be doing the same?

I have to admit, I held onto XP up to just a few months ago, but the transition to Windows 7 was fairly painless, especially once I'd made it look like XP again! Smiley Very Happy The only issues I had were a couple of old programs that wouldn't work, but I just found suitable upgrades for them. My main computer is about 5-6 years old, and Windows 7 had no trouble finding drivers, etc, so all my hardware runs fine.

I also have a a Windows 8 laptop, and that was more of a radical learning curve, but I'm just about used to it now. I'd still recommend Windows 7 over 8 though, especially coming from XP.

Having now followed your instructions F secure has installed and is working. What a shame Virginmedia didnot put this information out in their original email. As a result even though I have only installed F secure on my Desktop and laptop as far as F secure is concerned I have used 3 licences.

I will also have to contact my daughter to make sure her installation is functional as she too was unaware of the special requirments for those with virginmedia security on their machines.

Glad you got it solved. I agree Virginmedia should have informed their customers more explicitly, especially about the additional removal tool. Instead unfortunately users think that the problem is with the F-Secure product when it actually is with Virgin Media Security not being correctly removed, giving new F-Secure customers a bad first time experience of F-Secure even though F-Secure is not the reason for the problem.

About licenses

You can never lose a license! If you have for example 3 licenses and in your case you have 2 active ones and one ghost("dead") license, next time you install on a 3rd computer and enter your subscription key you'll get a message that all licenses are already used and you'll be asked if you want to move a license. The product will detect which license haven't been used recently. In your case the "dead" license from the first install you did will be moved to the 3rd computer.

Then it will still show 3 used licenses, but now all 3 are active licenses.

Thanks for that. When the Ubuntu version is available (beyond Beta) I'll install that (I dual boot on laptop and third machine is ubuntu only) So I'll move a licence for that

Re: How to install F-Secure SAFE on your PC - for Virgin Media customers

Can anyone advise?

I am a Virgin Media customer and I have tried to install FS but failed. I have followed the various helpful advice

  • Have ensured no updates for windows.
  • Taken off Virgin security and any other I think!
  • Rebooted
  • Reloaded

and all to no avail the program loads to circa 77% then fluctuates but hangs at circa 99%.

I have spent hours on what is described as an easy task and am about to give up.

The only thought I have is the spec for the FS program requires

Processor: Intel Pentium 4 or equivalent.

I have Intel Celeron processor T3100 does anyone know is this is classed as equivalent?  My OS is Windows 7 64-bit

It may be that my PC will not support the program! Or had anyone got any further ideas.

Yours very frustrated.

If you've definitely removed VMS using the uninstall tool, and any other security software, using their uninstall tools (links in stickies at top of board), then I would suggest running the F-Secure Uninstallation Tool, reboot, and atart again. It could be that the FS installation has partly installed, preventing further attempts at a full installation.

Re: How to install F-Secure SAFE on your PC - for Virgin Media customers

Karen, sounds like you have a fairly new PC so the requirements shouldn't be the problem. If they were you probably would have received a specific message about it at the beginning of the installation. The Celeron T3100 is a newer and more powerful(dual-core) processor than Pentium 4.

Follow Simon's advice, especially about the specific additional removal tool for Virgin Media Security: "UserCommunity-Uu-RpsUU.exe". It's in the first post of this thread, on page 1.

If you are unsure about having removed all other security products, download AppRemover and let that check your computer. When it shows a list if installed "Security Applications", write them down and then exit the application without letting it remove anything. If it finds any, get back to us and we'll help you decide if you should remove them or not.

Re: How to install F-Secure SAFE on your PC - for Virgin Media customers

Hello NikK,

License management in SAFE is a little bit different.

You don't have license keys anymore.

You do all the license/device management in your MySafe portal.

If you want to install a computer, you just click install in the portal.

If there are no seats available, you can remove a installation from the portal.

No entering of license keys anymore. No wondering which key was used on which device. No guessing of expiration dates and no need to "move" licenses around.

You have everything in one place :)

Cheers,
Stephan
