Important: We strongly recommend that you create an F-Secure KEY Master Password Recovery Code as soon as you have taken F-Secure KEY into use as this is the only way for you to regain your F-Secure KEY Master Password if you forget it. The Master Password Recovery Code is a unique and personal code that is the only means of regaining access to KEY, should you forget your Master Password. It is strongly encrypted and can only be decrypted on one of your connected devices. This means that it cannot be decrypted on any other user device. For your safety, KEY cannot reset your Master Password nor send you a recovery code if you forget your Master Password. This has been a conscious decision by F-Secure to increase your security and privacy. Every time you change your Master Password, KEY shows the Create Recovery Code view. We recommend that you save the code as an image and print a copy for safekeeping. The Master Password Recovery Code printout should not be stored in the same location as your device. If you connect new devices, F-Secure KEY may ask you to create a new Master Password Recovery Code. If this is the case, make sure you create a new Master Password Recovery Code, as the older code will not work anymore. Note: When you change your Master Password, you will receive a new Recovery Code. You will always need the latest Recovery Code to regain access to KEY if you forget your Master Password. This includes things like the town where you were born, what school did you go to, what was the name of your teacher, your mother's maiden name and so forth. To protect your sensitive data, F-Secure KEY uses the Advanced Encryption Standard with a key size of 256 bits. This algorithm works in the CCM mode for encryption; CCM is an acronym for a longer abbreviation, namely CTR mode with CBC-MAC. CTR stands for Counter, CBC stands for Cipher Block Chaining, and MAC stands for Message Authentication Code. Nowadays, AES is the recommended standard for modern data encryption. The master encryption key is derived from your master password using the Password-Based Key Derivation Function 2 (PBKDF2) algorithm specified in the Public-Key Cryptography Standards (PKCS) #5; in the PBKDF2 algorithm, we use the Hash-based Message Authentication Code (HMAC) SHA256, random salts and 20,000 of iterations. This makes it much more difficult to recover the keys through Brute-force or Dictionary attacks, even for weaker passwords. Once you've installed F-Secure KEY, and you start the application for the first time, you have to create a Master Password. This password is very important as it allows access to KEY, and protects all your password data. Choosing a good, hard-to-guess Master Password will keep your passwords safe. For your safety, KEY cannot reset your Master Password nor send you a recovery code if you forget your Master Password. This has been a conscious decision by F-Secure to increase your security and privacy. However, because of this, we strongly recommend that you create an F-Secure KEY Master Password Recovery Code as soon as you have taken F-Secure KEY into use. The Master Password Recovery Code is a secure way for you to regain your F-Secure KEY Master Password if you forget it. Related information What is an F-Secure KEY Master Password Recovery Code? If you have F-Secure KEY on either a single mobile device or only on your computer, your KEY data is also only stored on that device. The way F-Secure KEY has been designed is that syncing devices enables you to have your KEY data readily available and always up to date on other devices; this ensures that you have your KEY data elsewhere on another device. Therefore,  there's no need to worry if a device gets lost, stolen or damaged, your KEY data will still be intact on one of your other devices.  To enable sync, you first need to upgrade to KEY premium and then connect the devices running F-Secure KEY. Once you've upgraded to KEY premium, you can sync as many devices as you like, regardless of the device or platform. Note: If you only have KEY on a mobile device and you carry out a factory reset, the reset will also wipe all your KEY data from the device. After this, there is unfortunately no way to get the data back. Related information What is F-Secure KEY Premium? How do I upgrade F-Secure KEY on my devices to premium with a voucher code?

No, we have no way of decrypting any information that you have saved in F-Secure KEY. In addition, anyone using F-Secure KEY is anonymous to F-Secure, so we have no way of identifying an individual user's data. We never see any of your information at any stage, and therefore we can't decrypt it or hand it over to a third party. With F-Secure KEY, we use the Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) using the 256-bit block cipher. Alongside AES-256, we use a block cipher mode of operation called CCM mode (Counter with CBC-MAC). This is an authenticated encryption algorithm providing both authentication and confidentiality. Both the choice of encryption and anonymity of users were conscious decisions made to improve the security of the product and protect the privacy of our customers. No. All data is stored on the devices, so you can only access it there. If someone discovers your F-Secure KEY master password, they still need access to one of your connected devices to be able to access your KEY data.
